Library History

The library was established in 1961 as the “Private Chung Shan Dental College Library.” In 1962, it was renamed “Chung Shan Medical College Library” following the school’s restructuring. In August 1977, the institution was upgraded to a medical college, and the library was renamed “Private Chung Shan Medical College Library.”

In 1973, due to the growing number of staff and students, the original library facilities became insufficient. A new four-story building was constructed, covering an area of about 300 pings. It was completed on November 12, 1975, coinciding with the college’s 15th anniversary, and officially opened in September of the following year. The library expanded its facilities, hired professional librarians, and established a formal library system to support teaching, research, and learning.

To keep up with the times and encourage further studies, the library adopted an open-shelf management system in April 1981 and implemented a library automation system in 1994. In December 2011, the library moved to the Scholar Building, adding group discussion rooms, an I-Share area, and a medical humanities section. Additionally, “Learning Corner Spaces” were set up on the 10th and 12th floors of the Zhengxin Building to meet the needs of self-study and group discussions. Since 2018, the library has created art spaces to host exhibitions, broadening the artistic horizons of faculty and students and promoting a cultural atmosphere on campus.

In August 2015, the library merged with the Computer Center to form the “Library and Information Office,” divided into the “Library Services Section” and the “Information Services Section.” In March 2020, the library moved to the Teaching Complex Building in the Zhengxin Building, officially entering a new era of digital services. The library has gradually increased the procurement of e-books and e-journals, fully integrating digital learning environments with teaching settings, overcoming the spatial limitations of the physical library. Digital reading and learning can now be conducted anywhere using mobile or tablet devices. In September 2021, the Reading Room in the Cheng’ai Building was opened, providing a more comfortable and quiet self-study space, and relocating the national exam book section and printed theses to this location.
